Chapter 11 Muscle pains and CK

Paul Nicholls and Ian Young

  • • Myalgia may occur after lipid-lowering treatment, especially statins.
  • • True myositis is accompanied by a raised creatine kinase (CK) level in the blood.
  • • Minor elevations of CK are common and may not relate to statin treatment.
  • • Severe myositis or rhabdomyolysis is rare.
  • • Myalgia can be reduced by lowering the dose of statin, adding in other treatment, or changing to another statin.
